There are many Sami communities in this region that feature in the event. My role in the biennial is to open up conversations with participating artists that relate their work to what's happening elsewhere in the world. ### The Knowledge Exchange Project Just as nature's resources are often extracted without replacement, so knowledge is often gathered to be locked away in expensive books and restricted academic journals. Yet the exchange of knowledge can be beneficial when it is on an equal basis. What we learn can not only introduce something new into our own lives, but also help us better understand ourselves. For example, seeing how makers are sourcing raw pigments for paints in other cultures can prompt us to look around for potential colour sources in our own environment. This project will be part of the [December issue of Garland](https://garlandmag.com/issue-29/). The theme for this issue is "alchemy", which involves the transformation of materials, especially from the artificial into the natural. In history, alchemic knowledge was often a secret guarded by craft guilds. But today we share the challenge of making beauty out of an industrialised and mined world.
